# Create a Course

Set up a course with a cover, a summary members read before they start, and the plans that include it.

## Create the Course

1. In the sidebar, select **Content**.
2. Select **New course**.
3. Add a **Cover** image — this is what members see in the course list.
4. Enter a **Name**, up to 60 characters. Short names read better on a phone.
5. Write a **Summary**, up to 70 characters. Say what members learn and why it matters — it's required, because members see it on the course.

## Choose a Layout

**Layout** decides how the lessons are presented in your app.

* **List** stacks the lessons vertically. Best when order matters and members work top to bottom.
* **Carousel** shows swipeable cards. Best for short, dip-in-anywhere material.

You can change this later, so pick the one that matches how you expect members to move through it.

## Decide Who Gets Access

Under **Access**, select the plans that include this course. Each plan shows its price and billing period so you can tell them apart.

Leave every plan unselected while you're still building — nobody reaches an unpublished course, and you can grant access the moment it's ready.

Turn on **Track progress** if you want members to see how far through they are. Leave it off for reference material nobody is meant to "finish".

## Publish When It's Ready

The **Published** switch controls whether members can see the course at all.

1. Build your sections and lessons first — see [Structure a Course Into Sections and Lessons](/help/build-your-apps-content/structure-a-course.md).
2. Come back to the course, open it for editing, and turn **Published** on.
3. Check it in your app the way a member sees it.

A course with no lessons is worth leaving unpublished, even if the cover and summary are done.
