# Create an Interactive Sequence Lesson

Build a lesson members move through one step at a time, with a stopwatch or a countdown on each exercise.

> **Content** is available on certain plans and app types. If you don't see it in your sidebar, please check our pricing page for more information.

## When to Use a Sequence

A standard lesson is a page members scroll. A **Sequence** is a series of steps they work through in order — one exercise on screen at a time.

Use a sequence when the pace matters: a practice routine, a drill, a set of timed exercises. Use a standard lesson when members need to read, watch, and refer back. See [Build a Lesson With Blocks](/help/build-your-apps-content/build-a-lesson.md).

## Create the Sequence

1. In the sidebar, select **Content**.
2. Open the course and add a lesson.
3. Set the **Type** to **Sequence** — described as guided steps.
4. Name it, summarize it, and save.
5. Open the lesson and select the sequence editor.

## Add Your First Step

An empty sequence prompts you to **Add your first step**. Each step is one exercise.

1. Add a step.
2. Give it a **Title** — what the member is doing, like "Warm-up".
3. Add the rest of the steps in the order members should meet them.
4. Reorder them by dragging if you change your mind.

## Choose a Step Type

Each step is one of two kinds:

* **Exercise** — a step with an optional stopwatch. Turn the stopwatch on when you want members to see time counting up while they work, and off when the step has no timing at all.
* **Timed exercise** — a step with a fixed countdown. Set **Countdown** in seconds, for example 30.

Pick **Timed exercise** when the duration is part of the instruction. Pick **Exercise** when members set their own pace.

## Add Video and Instructions

Each step takes three media slots and a written instruction:

1. **Thumbnail** — the still image for the step.
2. **Instruction video** — how to do it. Members watch this before starting.
3. **Playback video** — what plays while they work through the step.
4. **Instructions** — the written version. Fill this in even when you've added video, because members read it when they can't play sound.

Save the step, then preview the lesson in your app to check the pacing before you publish it.
