# Set Your AI's Primary Role

Choose the role that decides how closely your AI sticks to your Resources versus drawing on broader context.

## Choose a Primary Role

The **Primary role** is what your AI is for. It steers how closely they stick to your Resources versus drawing on broader context.

1. In the sidebar, open the AI block and select **Behavior**.
2. In **Primary role**, choose the role that matches how you work:
   * **Coaching** — your AI keeps the conversation moving while drawing from your material.
   * **Reference** — your AI stays close to your material and shows where answers came from.
   * **Ideation** — your AI ranges more widely to brainstorm and make new connections.
3. Your selection saves on its own — the card shows which role is currently set.

Set the role first. Your custom rules and boundaries refine a role that's already pointing the right way.
